This course combines a study of the function and organization of the childhood-level mathematics curriculum and the integration of curriculum, with a survey of current teaching resources and research-based strategies to address the learning needs of diverse learners in mathematics. Students will study the development of mathematical skills and concepts through the use of manipulatives and abstract materials, with emphasis on the intuitive and inquiry methods, as per NCTM. Students will design learning units that address the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards (2019). This course integrates the use of instructional and assistive technology. 20 hours fieldwork required for initial certification. 15 hours fieldwork required for additional certification. Prerequisites: INCL*501 and INCL*502 OR INCL*601 and INCL*602. Additional pre- or corequisite for students in initial certification program: EDTS*523.

Welcome to PTU 101! I’m Dr. Donahue or Dr. D, and I’ll be your instructor for this semester. I’m excited for you all to be here—we have an exciting journey ahead exploring your next four years and the profession of physical therapy. My goal is to create a collaborative learning environment where we can explore concepts that are meaningful to you. 

Some key items for the course:

  • We meet on Wednesdays at 9:30 AM in Libary Media A. We only have 50 minutes together each week. Please be prompt so we can get the most out of our time together.
  • The syllabus lists all readings, assignments, and exams planned for the course. I'm happy to clarify anything about the schedule.
  • My office hours are by appointment. Please email me if you want to meet, and we can find a time to meet. Come by with any questions!
  • I encourage participation and vibrant discussions. Please feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and asking questions.
